New Year’s Resolution #201
January 7, 2010
In case you haven’t heard, we purchased a dog this last summer. He is a miniature dachshund and is the cutest dog you have ever seen… in pictures. In real life however, he happens to be somewhat of a terror. Running through the house at full tilt chasing after invisible creatures that seem to disappear as soon as he catches a whiff of food, at which point he begs to the point of exhaustion to get the smallest nibble from whatever it is you happen to be putting in your mouth. He has no idea if he will enjoy it or not but figures, “if you’re eating it than I must want it.”
Aside from all of the puppy things that every dog owner has to put up with, scooter is a good dog. He is the best second alarm clock I have ever owned…oh wait, you don’t know what a second alarm clock is? Let me explain. A few months after Scooter came back to live in our apartment, he started getting wise as to what that strange sound was in the morning. The “beep, beep, beep” coming from the bedroom meant that someone was going to have to get up to turn it off, so why not take that opportunity to bark incessantly so they don’t go back to sleep right? Well Scooter gladly took this on as his duty as we haven’t slept past 6:00 AM since. Until…
We recently arrived back from our long Christmas break. Ohio and Michigan were great and we had a wonderful time. Unfortunately when staying at someone elses house, Scooter gets a little jittery and has to let everyone know of this nervousness by barking himself to sleep every night. This is obviously a less than ideal way to sleep when you are a guest at another persons home. As a result, Scooter ended up sleeping with us on most occasions and has found his favorite spot in the bed is directly between myself and Laura, curled up in a little ball so that his cold nose is on my chin and his warm hind end is on Laura’s back. Need a better illustration? Allow me. Imagine if you will a large paper weight between ten and fifteen pounds with a small ice cube on one end and an inability to move, that would be my dog.
Needless to say, the last few nights have been anything but restful since we have still to unpack the rest of our stuff from the back of our car including Scooter’s cage. On that note, here is new year’s resolution #201: No Scooter in our bed ever again. Whew, glad to have that one crossed off!

Sawyer’s in my bed, Scooter’s in yours. What are parents to do?
